Acknowledgements
In bringing together these essays in honor of John Crossett, the editors have enjoyed the assistance of a number of good-hearted people and benevolent institutions. First thanks must go to our keyboard operator, Rebecca Cox, whose patience and industry never failed, even when the software in the computer and the foresight of the editors did. A special acknowledgment should also be given to William Duggins and Rosie Higdon for enabling us to run a full range of foreign accents on a system that had never before printed so much as a circumflex. Finally, we are grateful to the Philosophy Department at St. Michael’s College of the University of Toronto and to the English Department of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for under taking the computer costs associated with the project.
