About This Project

This bibliography is a product of the Engagement in Online Learning Faculty Learning Community, part of a SCHEV (State Council on Higher Education in Virginia) initiative to create community among faculty in Virginia and improve student learning.

From September 2019 to May 2021, our faculty learning community (FLC) met monthly to discuss student engagement.  The first year involved identifying common areas of interest in online student engagement from a diverse group of FLC members including faculty in different disciplines with divergent student demographics, a librarian and an instructional designer and locating pertinent literature related to these common areas of interest. During the second year, those members who chose to continue with the FLC focused on the literature that related to instructional design and assessment relating to online engagement, with particular consideration on the impact COVID-19 has had on online learning in higher education.

Even though we likely did not find every relevant resource, the process of locating and reading over peer-reviewed publications informed our own teaching and scholarly efforts.  We are sharing these compiled resources to help other faculty with interest in increasing engagement in their online courses.
